Blackpool (pronunciation (help·info)) is a seaside town in Lancashire, England. Lying along the coast of the Irish Sea, it has a population of 142,900, making it the largest settlement in Lancashire and the fourth largest in North West England.

Blackpool rose to prominence as a major centre of tourism during the 19th century, particularly for the inhabitants of northern mill towns.



A major rescue operation is under way after a helicopter with seven people on board crashed in Morecambe Bay.The aircraft, which took off from Blackpool Airport, was ferrying Centrica personnel to the gas field in the Lancashire bay when it came down.
